Okay so we are almost there in terms redefining the subject lines of our mails. Here are 5 more subject tips and then we can start experimenting.

11) Create a sense of urgency

In today’s time people have really no time so they start prioritizing their work. For example, if I have to pay my electricity bill and at the same time I have to go shopping. I will prioritize my work according to what is more urgent. As in if the last date of paying the bill is tomorrow I will do it first than go for shopping unless it is more urgent and I am hungry.

So, while writing the mail maintain a sense of urgency but also make sure your reader has sufficient time to think about it and decide their action. For example, if you send a mail providing them discount on clothes and tell them it’s valid only for next few hours its most likely that they won’t buy it because they have other priorities and also they need time to decide.

Subject lines that create a sense of urgency and exclusivity can give a 22% higher open rate. Use deadlines like next 48hrs or 24hrs will create a sense of urgency and people will like to do it now rather than keeping it for later in which case they may forget.

12) Use numbers

When you are creating a mail subject try to include number or data which makes it a more appealing. Facts and figure always makes the reader feels that you know what you are talking about.

You can use the length of the listicle, page length, offer or discount amount, relevant numbers etc. For example, for a news email you can use “Earthquake in (place) 30 injured”, for an offer you should write “Buy your next apparel at a discount of 40%” rather than “Buy your next apparel at a discount”.

13) Pose a compelling question

Try asking a question in the subject line which will create a sense of curiosity in the reader. Ask questions like “Why the traffic in your website is low?” or “Are you using your time efficiently?”. This creates a sense of curiosity

Example comes from DocuSign. They sent an email late in the lead nurturing process, with the subject line, „What are your customers saying?” The body of the email contained a bunch of case studies that were meant to help the recipient move closer to actually purchasing DocuSign.

14) DON’T USE ALL CAPS or overuse exclamation points!!!

People always prefer a smooth voice than a voice which is yelling when they are saying something. Because when someone is yelling it makes people understand less what they are saying and rather get irritated by the voice. The same yelling sensation comes into mind when you are using all caps letters or to many exclamation points!!!!!.

A subject line that says, “GET YOUR 40% DISCOUNT NOW!!!!!!” isn’t going to get you an email open. According to a study by the Radicati Group, more than 85% of respondents prefer an all-lowercase subject line to one in all caps.

Not only are these tactics disruptive, but they look spammy. When 69% of email recipients report email as spam based solely on the subject line.

15) A/B test your subject lines

While all these tips you should keep in your mind before preparing you next email, it’s also important to know that while something may work for one company may not work with others.

Always be open to new ideas and try altering your subject lines every time and try A/B testing and you can know which work best for you.

At the end of the day, if your emails aren’t getting opened, they’re not getting seen. You have awesome content to share, you just have to prove it in your subject line.
